Moviepie.com’s review of Impermanence of the Ordinary (6 out of 8!)

From the good people at www.moviepie.com! “The delightful short film The Impermanence of the Ordinary (6/8) screened with Spring & Arnaud and deals with one of my favorite subjects: archival photos of Toronto. Photographer Patrick Cummins has spent the past 30 years shooting the city, frequently revisiting locations to capture how they’ve changed as time has gone on. This is the type of stuff that I find fascinating, and I actually think director Dale…

SLO/MO Sessions EP1: Jadea Kelly

I’ve long since loved bluegrass music.  As Steve Martin points out, you just can’t be sad when there’s a banjo playing. Here in Toronto, we’re fortunate to host one of Canada’s finest contributions to bluegrass scene, The Slocan Ramblers.  All highly in-demand musicians in their own right, the members of the Slocans combine their forces to create wonderfully moving bluegrass. When I got an email from Chris Doble at Mojito…

The life and times of Maneli Jamal

When one thing leads to another. In February, I had shot an EPK for the Shafton Thomas Group.  Shortly after, the drummer from that band, Mackenzie Longpre posted a YouTube link to a guitarist he had played with.  On my first listen, I was astounded at the sound and virtuosity of the guitarist.   His name was Maneli Jamal. Intrigued to hear and learn more, I asked the Google about Maneli.  What I…

Next stop, Cannes.

I’m proud to announce that our short film Roi de Glace has been selected as an official entry into the (cycling) world-famous 2012 Bicycle Film Festival in New York City, which runs from June 27th – July 1st. We’ve re-edited the short for the festival, and it’s shorter, faster, and more action packed than the original!  Here is the trailer. The film will be available online again after it has made…

Praise for the King

It’s been a couple weeks since we posted Le Roi de Glace, and we’re happily getting some great praise for the short doc.  Big thanks to cycle blogs/sites urbanvelo.org, titsandtires.tumblr.com, flwrider.com, velodrone and ridetheblackline.com for the posts. We’re over 4k views, and 48 likes…and counting! Here’s some awesome comments from Ride The Black Line! If you’re too lazy to click the link – some of my favorite are: “It’s like…

Good Stories, told.

If you haven’t already heard, Arts & Rec is now based out of Toronto, Ontario.  To celebrate our move, we’re starting a new series based on local stories (yet untitled series). However, it will be in much the same theme as the “California is a place” series. To kick start this series, we’re offering the opportunity to give a voice to people, businesses, or ideas that otherwise wouldn’t be heard….

Le Roi de Glace: Toronto’s 2012 ice cycle race short doc

It started with a passing comment, from my friend Corey Wood, that I should come out and watch the Icycle race this year.  Why?  Because not only was he racing for his first time ever, but our mutual friend Matthew Domoney was also racing, and was confident of a win. With the race only a few days away and camera in hand, I met up with both Corey and Matt…

What I like about you: my favorite Vimeo

I was asked the question recently about the difference between Vimeo and YouTube. Vimeo is made by film-makers, for film-makers.  It’s platform exists to support a community of film-makers.  I’m not going to go into the technical differences, which can all be found by Googling “vimeo vs youtube,” but it’s safe to say that no serious cinematographer puts all there eggs in the YouTube basket. If you care at all…
